The Overzealous Overhang: Ignoring the 45-Degree Rule
You slice your model, a magnificent dragon with wings outstretched bandar slot. You print it without tree supports. The first few layers are perfect. Then, the printer begins the wing’s underside—a near-horizontal overhang. Filament drools into thin air, creating a bird’s-nest of spaghetti where a sleek wing should be. You’ve ignored the fundamental 45-degree rule.
The psychological bias here is overconfidence. You think, “My printer is well-tuned, it can handle this,” or you simply don’t visualize the physical reality of printing in mid-air.
The mechanical fix is simple. In your slicer, enable the “Overhang” setting. Set the angle threshold to 45 degrees. Makeshaper will now automatically generate tree supports only for surfaces steeper than this angle. This prevents unnecessary supports on gentle slopes your printer can handle.
The Monolithic Mistake: Supporting Everything, Everywhere
You load a complex figurine with dozens of small, separate overhangs. You enable “Generate Supports” and select “Everywhere.” The result is a solid block of support material encasing your entire model. Removal is a nightmare of snapping delicate parts and leaving scarred surfaces.
This stems from a scarcity mindset—the fear of print failure makes you think more support is always safer. It’s the “better safe than sorry” bias leading to a sorry mess.
The fix is strategic. Use the “Paint-on Supports” tool. Zoom in on your model and manually brush support enforcers only on the specific, critical overhangs—like the tip of a sword or a character’s chin. Leave the rest. Makeshaper’s trees will then grow only from those enforced areas, minimizing contact and material use.
The Blind Attachment: Ignoring Support Interface
Your tree supports print beautifully, like delicate bonsai holding up your model. You go to remove them. They either fuse permanently to the model, tearing away chunks, or they detach too easily during the print, causing a collapse. You treated all support contact the same.
This is caused by a lack of systems thinking. You see “supports” as one setting, not a system of distinct parts: the tree structure, the roof, and the interface with your model.
The exact fix is in the Support settings. Enable “Support Interface” and set a top interface layer. Use a dense pattern like “Rectilinear” or “Concentric.” Crucially, set a small but critical “Support Z Distance” (like 0.2mm). This creates a tiny, intentional gap between the top of the support and your model, allowing for clean separation.
The Flimsy Foundation: Under-Supporting Tall, Thin Trees
You’re printing a tall model with a high overhang. Makeshaper generates a single, spindly tree reaching up to it. Halfway through the print, the tall support begins to wobble, causing layer lines in the support that transfer into your model’s surface finish.
This is an oversight of structural physics. You trusted the algorithm to build a sound structure without considering the height-to-width ratio.
